Gastric sleeve or sleeve gastrectomy is a type of weight loss surgery in which a large part of stomach is removed. In this procedure, 60 to 80 percent of stomach is removed, and the stomach gains the shape of sleeve or tube as the result.
Removing a large part of stomach make patients eat less and change his diet. The procedure can be performed as an open surgery or as a laparoscopic surgery. It is one of the most common and effective ways of weight loss so far.
It is important to know that the procedure is irreversible and the size of stomach is permanently reduced. There are however patients who experienced stomach dilatation after a long time i.e. after 10 years. However, gastric sleeve surgery is not the only solution to reduce the size of stomach, there are other options such as gastric banding, gastric plication, or gastric bypass which lead to the same result.
