Root canal therapy refers to a treatment in which the bacterial infection that has entered tooth pulp or nerve chamber is removed.
A root canal is necessary when the tooth becomes irritated and inflamed because of deep decay, big fillings, trauma to the tooth, a chipped tooth or repeated dental work. If bacteria are not removed, they begin to multiply very fast and cause infections or tooth abscess. Since a tooth’s nerve is not vitally important to a tooth’s health, removing the nerve will not affect the normal function of the tooth.
In case that the tooth is so damaged that it cannot be fixed using root canal treatment, it is suggested to extract the tooth and do a dental implant or dental bridge instead. Sometimes root canal might make stains on the tooth, the problem can be fixed by dental veneers.
