Knee replacement, which is also known as total knee arthroplasty, is a surgery to remove severely damaged knee joint and replace it with an artificial part (prosthesis) made of metal alloys, high-grade plastics or polymers. This procedure is done to relieve pain in the knee and restore its function.
The most common cause of chronic knee pain and disability is arthritis. Most knee pain is caused by just three types: osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and post-traumatic arthritis.
Please note that knee prosthesis like hip prothesis would last at least 10 to 15 years and implant revision is required afterwards.
